D01: Redesign Web Page Flow to Reduce Decision Fatigue
How well does your web content flow?  Is your website organized according to the user journey? UC San Diego Library redesigned the flow of its interlibrary web pages to create a much better user experience.  This presentation will review common UX problems in website design using this project as an example.  It offers solutions to problems such as user decision fatigue and web content divided by organization line.

D08: Taking a (Cognitive) Load off: Improving User Experience in LibGuides
Lengthy descriptions of research databases can cause extraneous cognitive load for students. Furthermore, publisher descriptions of databases often don’t conform to students’ mental models. To address this, one library combined data from best practices and student vocabulary mined from chat reference transcripts to design a new formula for database descriptions in LibGuides. This session will discuss how the formula was developed and tested through a task-based usability study.

D10: Exploring Student Research Strategies through Cognitive Mapping
This presentation will describe an exploratory study on student research strategies conducted at an academic library. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how to use cognitive mapping in their own research and the benefits of grounded theory. The types of results that can arise from this research will also be discussed, including studying habits and patterns, the role of affect in research, and how academic libraries can better meet students’ needs.

D11: User Experience Activities in Small Academic Libraries
Although UX testing and design is very popular in academic libraries, the prevalence of these practices in small academic libraries is unknown. The MGH Institute of Health Professions librarians distributed a survey asking small academic libraries about recent and future UX activities and barriers they encountered. During this session, we will explore the results of this survey and generate discussion about the special needs of small libraries when it comes to UX testing and design.

D14-02: Everything and the Kitchen Sink: Unpacking Library Help
How helpful is library "help" content? For decades, libraries have created instruction and help content in a number of formats and on a range of topics, but have struggled to develop a coherent user support strategy that balances the different learning styles and needs of library users. This session will explore this problem in order to build a better foundation for understanding how support content should factor into the overall user experience.

D15-01: Toward An Inclusive UX: Lightweight Web Accessibility Evaluation
In developing Aurora, a web application to support the transfer of digital records from active organizations to archives, Rockefeller Archive Center undertook an accessibility evaluation of the application, testing it against the Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 standards to identify and fix issues. Our work has resulted in a set of recommended accessibility evaluation tools, best practices, and strategies for incorporating universal and inclusive design methodologies into UX work.

D15-02: Making Websites Archive-friendly
Web archiving is on the rise, as records management and collection development spill over to web-based content.  Yet, many insitutional websites and related websites are not designed with web archive-ability in mind, leaving these sites to be lost.  This short talk will explore what it means to make the web archive-friendly, resources for doing so, and brainstorm concrete ways to apply these ideas.

D17-01: "This looks like the 11th page of Google": Why We Do UX Research with Students Who Never Use the Library
To understand how the library fits into the lives of our users, we have to get outside the walls of the library. In this short talk, we will share what we have learned and improved by doing UX research with students who rarely or never use the library. You will leave with strategies for building your own participant recruitment toolkit to gain feedback from your user community outside the library.

D17-02: Is your library website beautiful?
The visual appearance of a website impacts user experience, from a user's perception of the website’s usability to a user's willingness to trust the website. Libraries must expand from examining the usability and feel of their websites to examining the visual appeal. This talk presents a UX study that examines the visual appeal of academic library websites. It provides examples of how libraries can improve their UX by analyzing the beauty of their websites.

D30: Service Design Meets Web Design: A case study of collaborating to design a proactive chat experience
This case study describes how two librarians addressed a trend of declining chat interactions when evidence suggests students still needed help. By collaborating with each other we combined our expertise in Service Design with Web Design to redesign the library's chat service, operating within several design and resource constraints. This case study will emphasize communication strategies, leveraging an Agile approach, designing for accessibility, and describes the impact of the redesigned proactive chat.
