Lengthy descriptions of research databases can cause extraneous cognitive load for students. Furthermore, publisher descriptions of databases often don’t conform to students’ mental models. To address this, one library combined data from best practices and student vocabulary mined from chat reference transcripts to design a new formula for database descriptions in LibGuides. This session will discuss how the formula was developed and tested through a task-based usability study.
